The competition for the most prestigious individual award of the 2023 Golden Ball is expected to be led by Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.
Messi won the World Cup 2022 with Argentina and Haaland won three titles with Manchester City in the 2022-2023 season. As for Kylian Mbappe, he scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, also won the Ligue 1 title and has scored 54 goals for PSG and Les Bleus.
When asked by TF1 if he could enter the 2023 Ballon d’Or race, Mbappe said:
“Golden Ball? It’s hard to talk about individual titles, because you have to put yourself before the collective. It’s something that doesn’t have to be said in public. Am I worthy of the Ballon d’Or? With the new criteria, how are achievements counted? Trophies, goals and influence right? I think I fit those criteria. I would say I do, but it depends on the people who vote and I’m always optimistic.”
Missing the appointment with the 2022 World Cup, while PSG cannot go deep in the Champions League, but the 24-year-old is still very active.
“What can I learn from this season with France? The World Cup, of course. Those are the special things of the year, the decisive moments. I would trade my three goals in the final for an own goal and a win. History only writes about the winners. We want to write history. It’s hard to go through the trophy like that.”
Mbappe’s future remains open at the moment as he is said to have informed PSG of not renewing his contract, meaning he will become a free agent in 2024. PSG may have to sell him this season. this summer for a hefty fee.
