The head coach of Inter Miami, Gerardo Martino, has hinted at the possibility of signing Luis Suarez as a free agent for the 2024 Major League Soccer season. Martino stated that the club will analyze the team’s needs for the new season, with and without Suarez, before making a decision. There are rumors that Suarez may join his former Barcelona teammates Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jodi Alba at Inter Miami this summer. To play in the MLS, Suarez is willing to return all his salary from Gremio and pay an additional amount to dissolve the contract. However, Gremio’s leadership has declined this offer.
Suaгez agreed to play for Gгemio for two years starting in January 2023. However, it was reported in December 2023 that the parties mutually agreed to terminate the contract a year earlier than planned. Suaгez, who was 36 years old at the time, cited his physical limitations as the reason for the termination. He explained that he did not have the strength to meet the demanding requirements of the Brazilian championship and asked for compassion from the fans.
Although there were rumors that Suaгez might join Inter Miami, he denied any contact with the club. He stated that he still had a contract with Gгemio and thanked them for their understanding of his situation. As of now, Suaгez is uncertain about his future with the club or if he will find another outlet to continue playing.
During an interview with Uruguayan television program Punto Penal, Suarez revealed that he and Messi had a shared dream of retiring together. They had planned to do so when they were at Barcelona, but Suarez moved on to Atletico Madrid while Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain. Their fantasy was to spend their golden years playing for the same club, and there was even talk of playing in the MLS after leaving Barca. However, Messi is currently playing for Inter Miami and enjoying himself. Suarez’s contract with Gremio expires in December, which opens the door for him to sign with Inter Miami during the transfer window in the new year. He could then participate in the 2024 MLS season, which starts in February.
Messi regards Suarez as both a close friend and a valuable member of the team. Together at Barcelona, they were instrumental in winning five league titles, including four King’s Cups and one Champions League. Messi currently holds the record for the most goals scored for Barcelona with 672, while Suarez ranks third on the list with 198 goals.
